Banksy Rat Rap

I) Banksy rat anarchist

Banksy is a street artist deeply inspired by rats. For him, rats represent the human race. The Anarchist Rat was created in 2004 in Sloane Square, London. It depicts a rat, again in black and white, but this time holding a sign. This sign displays the logo of the anarchist movement , marked by a circled A.

The anarchist movement has been contested for many years. Indeed, it is associated with disorder, imbalance, and a lack of authority. But in another sense, it also represents freedom and liberation . It is this second meaning that Banksy wishes to evoke. Through this "anarchist rat," he aims to challenge the oppression and censorship inflicted upon the population. Many protesters are even using it today to express their discontent . A Banksy "anarchist rat" was notably spotted at the Place de la Bourse, a regular site of Yellow Vest protests. It is not certain that the artwork is actually by Banksy. Nevertheless, his work has become a powerful symbol of protest .

II) Banksy and the Radar Rat

Radar Rat is one of Banksy's most famous screen prints. First released in 2004, it depicts a rat standing on its hind legs and wearing an earphone. It is also seen holding radar equipment, which is supported by a coral-red spiral in the background . Finally, the rat holds a tape recorder in its left hand.

Initially, the radar rat was known as "Sonic Radar." Banksy then painted it on several walls in London, notably on King's Road . Later that same year, the artwork was reproduced as a stencil on canvas. But the "Radar Rat's" notoriety grew most significantly after its appearance in the artist's pop-up shop, Santa's Ghetto, and especially after it graced the cover of Dirty Funker's album "Future" in 2008. Since then, it has become one of the most sought-after screen prints on posters and clothing. Some even prefer to have it tattooed. But what is the meaning behind this artwork?

By drawing the Radar Rat, Banksy wanted to show the true nature of the rat and its relationship with the world we live in. Far from its stereotypical image as an idiot and ungrateful creature, the rat proves to be an intelligent and tenacious animal . It likes to listen to the world around it, thanks to its earpiece and the red sonar that collects all the data. In this context, we can say that Banksy wanted to reflect the image of the artist through the rat: often rejected, yet having a significant impact on civilization as a whole. Just like the rat, the street artist also exists without permission.

III) Banksy and the rat photographer

Banksy's Photographer Rat was first seen in 2005 off the Old Street and on the north bank of the Thames. It depicts a black and white rat standing upright, holding a professional camera and attempting to take pictures. This suggests it might be a spy, a curious observer wanting to learn more about the outside world.

Banksy's Rat series of artworks is highly regarded by art enthusiasts. However, it also attracts considerable criticism. By mocking social, political, and economic realities, it is viewed negatively by authorities who see Banksy as an instigator of hatred and rebellion. Nevertheless, his works are captivating and striking , so much so that many art enthusiasts use them as inspiration for their paintings and canvases.

IV) Banksy and the rat " you lie"

The "You Lie" rat is another of Banksy's works . It depicts a rat standing upright, holding a sign that reads "You Lie . " By creating this graffiti, Banksy wanted to denounce the lies and injustice so prevalent in today's society. Often, we are afraid to express our frustrations and prefer to endure them. Indeed, we live in a world where everything is controlled and established. If we try to challenge the status quo, we end up being oppressed. The "You Lie" rat is therefore a kind of rebellion that seeks to assert the truth.

The "you lie" rat is particularly popular with urban art enthusiasts , especially young people. It's often seen screen-printed on T-shirts, on canvas or as a painting, as a stencil on walls, etc. It's usually presented in black and white. However, it can also be chosen in red, where the phrase "you lie" is displayed.

V) Banksy “rap rat”

Just like the "radar rat ," the "rap rat" was first released in 2004. At the time of its release, it was presented in red, black, and white. But later, specifically in 2015, Banksy also created it in other colors, intended especially for collectors at Dismaland in Weston-super-Mare. These colors are pink, green, orange, blue, and gray.

As its name suggests, the "rap rat" evokes the underground scene of the 80s and 90s. Originally, it was depicted as a rat wearing a baseball cap and a large chain necklace, reflecting the style of rappers. It was also often shown carrying a boombox. But many other versions have since appeared. For example, there's the rap rat with the word POW , a reference to Banksy's publishing house. Another version features a rat wearing a chain necklace with a dollar sign pendant and a few musical notes. These notes serve as a reminder that rap is a highly inspiring genre of music.

The term "rap rat" evokes the artist's rebellious side. Indeed, rap has always been considered an art of revolt . It serves to express the failings of society.

VI) Banksy “love rat”

Love is the most powerful and intense feeling that exists. It's therefore natural that we want to express and share it. Banksy chose to convey this feeling primarily through graffiti .

In 2004, Banksy painted the "Love Rat" in the streets of Liverpool. It was initially presented as a mural. Later, it was reproduced in a very limited edition of only 150 signed prints . In this work, Banksy depicts a black and white rat holding a paintbrush, after having drawn a large heart above it. The heart is colored red, the emblematic color of passionate love. At first glance, one might think that "love art" is an expression of love, of happiness… But upon closer inspection, one sees blood flowing onto the heart (represented by the bright red paint). It then becomes clear that this is a heart in pain, a bleeding, wounded heart.

The love rat thus reflects the power of love and its effects on our existence. Indeed, it can both amaze and revive us, as well as destroy us. This work by Banksy is often used by people to express their heartbreak or to tell those who have hurt them how betrayed and abandoned they feel. Banksy even joked about it on his website, saying that the "love rat" is ideal for cheating partners.
