I) The minimalist style: what is it?

When it comes to interior design, there are several types of decor: modern, rustic, retro, contemporary, etc. Minimalism is primarily associated with contemporary decor, although it can also be found in other styles.

As the name suggests, the minimalist style is a decor that focuses only on the essentials. It is inspired by the principle of "Less is more," which means "less is more" in French. It therefore eschews all flashy and bulky accessories, focusing only on the bare minimum. In other words, it is a simple, streamlined decoration with few frills.

If we go back to its origins, the minimalist style emerged in the 1960s. During this period, society was facing excessive consumption, especially in terms of interior decoration. People were buying everything they found on the market and incorporating it into their homes, which created a sort of clutter within the space. To remedy this, the room needed to be decluttered, and that's where the concept of minimalism emerged.

II) The minimalist style: how is it characterized?

There are mainly 5 characteristics of the minimalist style: simplicity, functionality, elegance, cleanliness, and modernity.

1. Simplicity

If in a bohemian or industrial style, we like to associate a multitude of decorative objects and accessories, that is not the case with minimalist style. The latter remains simple and this should be reflected in its decorative elements. In this type of decor, we work with the bare minimum, meaning that we will only incorporate essential furniture and accessories in a room. For example, for a bedroom, the principle is to add only a bed, two bedside tables, a desk, a chair, and some storage. Some even prefer to place the storage in another room to save space.

Similarly, for decorative accessories, keep it as simple as possible. A few paintings, mirrors, textiles, and lighting fixtures are enough to adorn the room. You don't need to go overboard with decorative objects.

2) Functionality

As mentioned earlier, minimalist style imposes the bare minimum. Therefore, it is essential to avoid cluttering your interior with unnecessary elements. If possible, avoid placing two items with the same functionality in one room, unless it serves a practical purpose. For example, in the living room, you don't need to install two sofas. One of medium size will suffice to furnish the room. In short, try to focus on the essentials and ask yourself if you really need a particular item when furnishing.
